Welcome to the Y1W class page!

Every day in Year 1 is a busy one, but always fun! We love learning and always work hard to be the very best that we can be.

In RE this term, we have learnt about the special people in church. We even thought about which roles and jobs we could do to help in church – from welcoming people into church, to being in the choir, reading from the Bible and helping to clean the church for Mass, there was a role for everybody!

During Lent we have enjoyed learning about the real meaning of Easter. We learnt about the special events of Holy Week, and acted out some of the important parts, including The Last Supper.

We have been working so hard with our writing in Literacy, using Talk for Writing to help us to learn stories and non-fiction texts to help us write them. This term we have especially enjoyed using ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘Farmer Duck’ as our focus texts, learning to tell the stories and then creating our own.

We are also working hard with our reading, and World Book Day gave us the chance to celebrate our love of books and reading. Look at our fantastic character costumes!

In our Maths sessions we are learning to become confident with numbers up to 100, and solving adding and subtracting problems. We love using counting songs and rhymes to help us – these are some of our favourites:

Counting Super Hero

The Big Numbers Song

Working carefully to solve number problems in Maths!

We have also been learning to tell the time and recognise coins so that we know how to spend them!

We had a fantastic visit to Danby! We learnt about a variety of animals, what they look like, where they live and what they eat. We even got to touch some of them. We loved the ‘Percy the Park Keeper’ trail too, helping Percy collect all of his animals.

This term our Science topic has been ‘Materials’. We have enjoyed learning about the properties of materials, and even investigating the best material to make a waterproof roof for the Three Little Pigs!

We have loved our topic of The Great Fire of London this term! Look at some of our fabulous work!

The Great Fire of London Game – why not have a go…

This term we have enjoyed developing our skills in Tag Rugby and Gymnastics – we have some super gymnasts!

On our Internet Safety Day we learnt about the importance of using the internet sensibly and safely.

We loved practising our singing and performing skills at our ‘Snappy Spring’ event, where we were able to perform for our families with children from other schools.

During our Parental Engagement afternoon this term we made Holy Week spinning wheels, to help us to remember the real meaning of Lent and Easter.
