Hello! Welcome to Y4W’s page
We have had a fantastic learning journey in Y4W so far this year! Every day, we have worked really hard and learned many new and exciting things, across all subjects in the curriculum.
Carry on reading to find out a little bit more about what we have been doing in our classroom so far this year…
In RE, we have identified and explored the different actions and symbols that we find in Catholicism and we have begun to learn about the different particular reasons why these actions and symbols are used.
So far this year, we have learned about Jesus’ family, we have explored the actions and symbols behind the sacrament of Confirmation, planned our own Christmas Mass and explored how the life of a Christian is celebrated in the Catholic Church when they die.
This term, we are currently learning about the different parts of the Mass, with a particular focus being placed on the Communion Rite.
We have worked very hard in our Literacy so far this year! Last term looked at stories in historical settings and we used Terry Dreary’s ‘The Captive Celt’ to write help us our own story in an historical setting. We have also looked at writing explanation texts in which all of the pupils produced their own step-by-step account of how the digestive system works!
So far this term, we have been using the traditional poem ‘Beowulf’ to write our own story-poem to tell around the fire of the mead-hall. We’ve been creating our own kennings and story-mapping, creating our own heroes and monsters in order to perfect our story-telling skills,
We will soon be looking at newspaper reports and the pupils (and budding journalists!) will be writing their own exciting newspaper articles! Watch this space…
In our Maths lessons, we are currently looking at fractions.
We are also having a really big post on learning and being able to rapidly recall our times tables, so that we know them inside out and back to front.
To help us learn our times tables and test us on our rapid recall, the pupils have been using ‘Hit the Button’ and ‘Squeebles’ on the iPads. You can find them below – along with other fun learning apples to download.
Last term in Science, we had lots of fun learning all about the human digestive system, the different types of teeth and food chains.
This term we have been looking at habitats and how animals adapt themselves to different habitats. We have looked at the seven characteristics of all living things and at categorising animals into different groups. It really is fascinating stuff!
Last term, our topic was ‘Why did the Romans Invade Britain?’ and on top of our class work, we had a visit from a Roman lady, Claudia, and some of our students got the chance to dress up and hold real Roman weapons!
This term, we have explored the Anglo-Saxons’ invasion in our topic ‘Who came after the Romans?’. We particularly enjoyed looking at how much Britain has changed today in comparison with Anglo-Saxon England.
Soon, we are going to find out ‘What Make the Earth Angry?’ and learning all about volcanoes! We cannot wait!
On top of all of our learning, we’ve enjoyed special days together exploring the key British Values of Individual Liberty, the Rule of Law and Democracy, Internet Safety and our school vision statement theme of Love and Protection.
SMC is most definitely the place to be!
